Device to condense drinking water from the atmosphere
Design © Copyright Gian F. Badraun 2003

My latest invention is a solar powered device to condense
drinking water from the atmosphere. The design is fully scaleable.
Yield is approximately 2 litres of water with a 100 Watt solar panel
per 10 hours of sun shine in Australian and New Zealand latitudes.
This unit is suitable for arid and outback conditions where there is
no mains power available.

The description of the device is as follows: During the day a trackable
solar panel charges a battery bank. As soon as it gets dark and the moisture
level in the atmosphere increases, a fan draws ambient air across a heatsink
type ribbed surface which is cooled by means of a peltier element. Automatic
temperature regulation ensures that the cooled surface remains at approximately
1 degree celsius. The moisture in the ambient air condenses on the cold surface
and the moisture droplets run into a collection vessel.

It is obvious that the efficiency depends on a number of factors. The most
important are the number of sunshine hours at the specific latitude, the moisture
content and the temperature of the night air. As the temperature of the night air
decreases towards the temperature of the cooled surface (1 degree C) the
condensation rate also decreases.

A simpler and cheaper unit operates from mains power and is able to run
24 hours and seven days a week. This unit is suitable for home steads and family dwellings.

I can provide for sale construction plans or complete units for capacities from
2 litres per night (solar powered) to 50 litres per 24 hours (mains powered)
